Hotlink Protection Plugin for Wordpress

Overview and Features

Do you have problems that other people hotlink your images in guestbooks, bulletin boards and other sites? Then this plugin for wordpress helps you without breaking online feedreaders.

How it works:

  • Referrer check if someone requests an image from your blog.
    If the referrer is not empty and not your blog the request is redirected to an information image
  • The image urls in the feed are replaced by an alternate url. This url is not protected by a referrer check so online feedreaders get the image

What it not does:

  • It doesn’t protect the images in the feed. So hotlinking the image urls from the feed is possible. But in my opinion it is nearly impossible to protect this images without breaking some online feedreaders.
  • It doesn’t prevent someone from downloading your images and placing them on their own webspace

It’s tested with wordpress 2.0.10 and 2.1.3

Installation

Unzip the zip file in your plugin directory of wordpress (’wp-content/plugins’) and activate the plugin through the admin interface.

If you use a gallery plugin you need to enter the url pattern for the images in the options menu. For example, I use mygallery here and the images are located in wp-content/myfotos. So I enter the url wp-content/myfotos to urls to protect.

Normaly if someone hotlinks your image the plugin will serve this image:

If you want to use a custom image activate “Use custom image” in the options and upload an custom image to your theme directory. Enter the name of the image file in the options.

    Did you try on your own blog? That could be problem with caching that bloglines didn’t read your feed again. I will look after it to find a solution.

    Great idea but it does work for me. I have a site which has hotlinked one of my images. I tried updating and saving the post like you suggested and that site was still showing my image. I finally had to rename the image to pull it off the other site. BTW, the image was stored in the uploads folder.

    Hallo, habe Dein plug-in installiert und ausprobiert und es funktioniert einwandfrei. Gute Sache ! Ich habe fuer einen bestimmtezn Teil in meinem Blog ein anderes WP-THEME installiert und kopiere in dieses ‘Unter-Thema’ die entsprechenden Eintraege incl. Fotos etc. Dein plug-in macht dann genau das was es machen soll. Gibt es eine Moeglichkeit Hotlinking zu erlauben, heisst fuer bestimmte URL’S ????

    I will look after the problem that it is not working out of the box. The problem seems, that feedreaders cache the feed. So in the next version, the alternative urls for the feed-images will be active from the start, but the protection for normal images will be activated later. I’m thinking about 6 hours after the next post is published. This should be enough time for all feedreaders to re-read the feed, I hope.

    @Metty: I will think about it.
    @Klaus: Weiß ich momentan auf anhieb nicht, wie ich das einbauen kann, aber ich überleg mir was.

    Hi,
    After installing the plugin my feed became broken. Nothing else has been change before this for some time - so I’m fairly sure it connected to the plugin.

    Does your plugin change anything in any headers or other files that may have caused this?

    If you could look at my feed and see if you can figure it out I would be very grateful.

    I forgot to include what is showing up when attempting to view my feed:

    Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/ronpembe/public_html/wp-blog-header.php:24) in /home/ronpembe/public_html/wp-rss2.php on line 9

    Also, I have updated my permalinks and disabled cacheing until this is fixed. I attempted resyncing at Feedburner.

    Ich hatte das Plugin installiert und was soll ich sagen. Es funktioniert. Es funktioniert sogar zu gut, da z.B. bei Bloglines keine Bilder mehr angezeigt wurden. Musste es dann leider wieder deaktivieren.

    Ron, re the “headers already sent” error: Usually this has to do with extra spaces/blank lines at the beginning or ending of the offending .php file.

    Check to see if the plugin has anything after the final ?>

    Hi, I cannot manage to have it working. I wonder what it should be the format of INFORMATION IMAGE link in the Hotlink option on WP control panel. I typed:

    http://myblog.com/wp-content/p.....forbid.png

    so the link where the image I want to use is. Unfortunately it doen’t work… It doesn’t work either if I just leave as it is (forbid.png). Any help?

    To the commenter above me “Tom W” who said the plugin doesn’t work because he tested it with online tool http://coldlink.com/htm/tool.htm

    Note the instructions on the above URL: “Remember to clear your browser cache first in order to avoid false positives in your testing.”

    If the image you’re testing is already in your BROWSER CACHE, of course if you use the online tool to load the image, the image will be served from your existing cache (hence, why you think the test failed).

    Empty your cache. The plugin works — I just tried it with the online testing tool.

    Is it possible to just block certain sites? I dont mind hotlinking - only when the person gives me 10000 hits in 2 days when he uses a picture in an online chatagent. Otherwise I’m fine with people hotlinking - an ‘add to hotlinker’ plugin would be awesome.

    Hi,

    I had some problems getting it to work (using firefox) even after clearing FF’s cache. I then looked it at in another browser and another computer and it worked just fine.

    So once you get it set up try looking at the hotlinked image in another browser or on another computer.

    Doesn’t work a bit! I have an “afbeeldingen” folder at the same ‘level’ as wp-content, etc. so I added “afbeeldingen” first and later the complete url of this folder to the options, but hotlinks are still possible from any website (I tried it with Browzar, different images, etc.).

    You’re not going to believe this. I have been fooling around with htaccess files and this plugin for over a week and now I accidentally find out that when I change something of the permalinks (another option and back to default is enough) and suddenly the plugin works! It is as if WP first didn’t ‘know’ that there was an htaccess file…

    Hi, I installed the plug-in on my blog but it’s not working.
    All the settings are on default for the plug-in.

    Just installed it and didn’t work.
    My wordpress version is 2.3.2.

    Any ideas ?

    I’ve tried to test the plug-in on my computer, different browsers and also different computers.

    I’m very curious to find out if this will actually help me reduce my monthly bandwidth. So far, I have noticed people hotlinking my files, but have been unwilling to take any action. If this plugins leaves the feedreaders alone, it has a good chance of staying around. I’m using WP2.5.1 by the way.

    hi I was using this, it removed the image from the person hotlinking, but it also removed it from mine!

    The forbid.png photo doesn’t come up either.

    A very nice Wordpress plugin! Have it immediately when I once tested in the Wordpress blog and it works fine. Thanks to the developers of the plugin.
